You know when you are listening one of those songs you love, and suddenly you stop yourself and decide to actually listen to the lyrics, to pay attention to what they are singing, what they are saying, and you then realise that, it is either totally bollocks, it makes no sense, or you just don’t agree at all with what they are singing with? Then you are left with the doubt if you should still love the song, or you should delete it from your ipod…
Well, I just had one of those moments… The song in question is a Spanish tune from the group Mocedades, which is quite an old group (and by old I mean, dunno 70s? Maybe 80s? Put it this way, my mum loves them. Hi mother, again). They have some amazing tunes, the kind that talk about despair, love, relationships, etc. Very cliche, very corny (some of them), very your-parents-music…
But they have this song called ‘Secretaria’ (’Secretary’ for those of you who don’t want to use your inner-built translation device) which I just can’t stop singing at the top of my voice whenever I am on my own in the flat. It’s very over the top, and you can only sing it if you do so with huge arm movements, exagerating the words and trying to feel the song. I should be in Eurovision.
Anyways, I stopped myself halway through the song and decided to really listen what it is about (lyrics here – afraid they’re in Spanish)… and man, is this woman a nutter. So she is a secretary, who has worked for her boss for the past 20 years. She has worked hard in the office, she has helped this guy build whatever empire he has built, she has taken care of everything, and she has been ignored and used throughout the 20 years. Also, she has helped him with his love affairs, bought the flowers he gives the different girls, and lied to his wife about where he is. Because, indeed, he is already married. And even after she knows that he is a cheating husband who completely and utterly ignores her while taking advantage of her, she is still in love with him.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for romantic stories of impossible loves, but surely this one takes the mickey!? Who in their right frame of mind would love a guy/girl like that!? Gees…. We are truly and absolutely doomed…
