I’ve got some really random stuff in my i-pod. There is no denying it, and what the heck, I’m proud of my eclectic taste (in everything). Funnily enough, since my laptop has gone bust (for the past 6 months) I actually update my songs on my ipod on my friend’s computer, which means whatever randomness I have in my ipod, chances are she has it too. At least all the English-language things, since I believe she might not be too keen in my Spanish cds… Salsa anyone? Cheesy European pop? It’s ace!
I tend to play my music in shuffle mode, more than listen to an album. I like walking down the street not knowing what song will come next. It makes for amusing walking and guessing, mainly when it jumps from ‘What’s This?’ from the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack to Madonna’s Hung Up, followed by a bit of Juanes, and then some Rufus Wainwright. Some songs I skip without giving it a chance, while others, I just smile like crazy when they come on, and they totally make my day.
There are three particular songs which, at the moment, I adore. When the ipod plays them, I tend to ‘rewind’ them once they finish and listen to them again. Sometimes three times on a row. Two of them are English, one in Spanish, and I’m trying to find links to them in You Tube or similar so you can have a listen, and judge (them and me…). Click on the song names!
Teddy Thompson – In My Arms. I saw him life years ago, as the warm up for Martha Wainwright, and he does have some good stuff, but this song is just great, real mood lifter! (apparently, I just found out, there is an acoustic version… interesting, though a bit more boring…).
Coldplay – Viva La Vida. I don’t particularly love them, and generally, I find their albums a bit monotonous and very similar, but they always have aone song in each album which I love. Viva La Vida is such a mood lifter like In My Arms, it just makes me want to jump and sing out loud wherever I am (which, by the way, Iceland staff don’t appreciate…).
La Oreja De Van Gogh – Jueves. This Spanish group has a consistency in making amazing songs, and there is almost no song they’ve made which I don’t like, but in their latest album, they have this song which I think it’s beautiful. It tells the story of a girl who always takes the same train to work, and always sees this guy who she fancies, but, she is to afraid to talk to, so she never does. One day though, she gets up, trembling nervously, goes to him, and says hi. He looks at her and answers: I have never met you before, but I have always missed you. Shortly after, they both die, since they have taken the train which was bombed on March 11th 2004, in Madrid. It’s a beautifully sad song.
