A Spanish Medical Story

There is today in the news this story that you really couldn’t make up… Apparently this woman is suing the Canary Islands hospital service for a mix-up which led her to be taken home by the wrong mother when she was born… 28 years ago! She discovered she had an identical twin when she was mistaken for someone else in a shop (we are guessing she was mistaken for who she now knows is her identical twin… because if she was mistaken for a complete random person this story would even be more freaky…). So the two sisters (who have not known about the other girl’s existence till now, 28 years later) found out they were born in the same hospital in 1973 (duh! They’re twins!) around the same time (I would say one after the other one…) and a DNA test showed they were identical twins. So many questions here… like, didn’t the mother realise she was missing a baby after pushing twice? Was the twins-mother given the baby of the other woman that took one of the twins without knowing it wasn’t her baby? Did the hospital not notice they were giving wrong babies to wrong mothers? Was there a Coca-Cola bending machine in the waiting room?

Yeah, that last question has nothing to do with anything, but it would be interesting to know…

I think this was a bored hospital intern who wanted to find out how long is it going to take for one of the mothers to find out they came home with the wrong baby… But really, it’s a weird story.
