50 Gayest Songs
There is an Australian magazine that last March, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Sidney’s Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, got all its readers to name the ‘gayest songs’, the campest tunes in the history of music. I am not going to name all the 50 of them (you can see the whole list here), but just mention some of the things that surprised me.
First of all, Queen’s I Want To Break Free is only at number 21… I mean, have you seen the music video? No? Click here. That’s pretty gay right? And iconic! And it’s Queen, come on! They should be in a better position than 21st! And they only have one song in the list… And what about Rumanian group O-Zone’s Dragostea Din Tei? Where are they in the list!? Fair enough they might not be as good as Gloria Gaynor, George Michael or Kylie, but come on! We all danced our little red shinny shoes away when they came out! You don’t remember O-Zone? Maybe their name is not familiar, but watch the music video. What did I tell you!? Oh, and you on the corner, stop dancing with your feet.
Judy Garland’s Over The Rainbow at number 15 sounds about right, and same with Gaynor’s I Will Survive at 3, but Madonna’s Vogue at 9!? And only 2 songs? (The other one is Express Yourself). Whenever I have heard Vogue in a club, the dancefloor gets packed with everyone trying to imitate her moves! And what about Like A Virgin, Material Girl or Like a Prayer? That last song gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. Don’t know too many gay men (or women for that matter) who don’t love it!
I was surprised to re-discover Pet Shop Boy’s Go West (6th place), which I had forgotten about, and which is really cheesy and camp, but dead good (even if it reminds me of the Soviet regime, for no real reason…), and I still don’t like Manilow’s Copacabana (25th) or Belinda Carlisle’s Summer Rain (34th), but the rest of the list is made up with your usual Elton John, Whitney Houston, Donna Summer…
I am also gobsmacked that there is only one ABBA song (haven’t they seen the Mamma Mia! phenomenom!?) but fair enough they have landed the number 1 spot with their Dancing Queen. Still… I think Dragostea Din Tei should be in that list… In fact, I think I’m going to put the CD on while I do some dishes… I know I have it somewhere…
